Formatting excel data

Is there a way in the xml file to format the data. For example, can I specify whether the data is a string, number, currency, etc. If so, could you provide some examples?

It is my understanding that you can format the data by using the attribute "cell type" in the xml file. Is there doc somewhere on this and the formatting options?
