I see, the method described in the thread You mentioned works perfectly. Sorry for not having searched thoroughly enough.

My plan is to kind of misuse GPSDateStamp and GPSTimeStamp to overcome EXIF-spec's lack of a timezone-tag by storing UTC in there, and local time in the other timestamp-tags.
