Hi Phil,
I came accross the message in the subject line and wonder about possible effects.
I am not really having a problem, rather I'd like to seek your advice and opinion on this

This message occured while working with ExifToolGUI from Bogdan Hrastnik. It's not that I think it might be a program error, I think it makes sense because of what I did.
What I did was to convert a Sigma-X3F raw file into a TIF file. So far so good.
That file I opened in Nikon Capture NX2 for further editing and then saved that file as NEF.
Upon inserting GEO-Data ExifTool threw this warning of 'Invalid MakerNotesSigma data'. That did not really surprise me as it makes sense after some reflecting.
What puzzels me is that when I reopen the NEF-File from another drive and after clearing the cache for NX2, the original and the new version of my editing is still available while the makernotes remain 'invalid'.
Isn't it the space for makernotes where NX2 would keep its versioning?
Leaving out the versioning feature, I saved the NEF file in NX2 as TIF and ran ExifTool <filename> again to see what might have changed.
The message now is '(minor) Possibly incorrect maker notes offsets (fix by -83680583?)' and the fields referring to SIGMA makernotes are filled with not meaningful rubbish (that I cannot display here due to the UTF-8 ecoding).
So initially I had a one line warning only whereas now rubbish in the makernotes is displayed by ExifTool.

What to do? Well maybe I should not use NX2 to process TIF files created in SIGMAS RAW-processor SPP. Both have some really nice features such as the 'X3F-Fill-light' and Nikons 'Color control point' both I would not want to miss.
How about throwing corrupted makernotes overboard, is that possible? But then this would complicate any workflow.
I am afraid I got caught in the mill of incompatibility. Worse I came accross this unexpected feature only today after I have edited a few hundred files that way already. So I guess I do have a problem hidden inside the imagefiles.
I am curious about your expert opinion.
